Le Anh

Due to complicated and raging storms and floods, some national highways have been damaged by landslides, while many road projects have been delayed. Besides, the increasing traffic volume and overloaded vehicles have degraded many roads, according to the directorate.

With the estimated cost of VND13 trillion, the road maintenance fund can now meet only 40% of the demand and the remaining amount will be sourced from the State Budget.

Some 30% of the maintenance work of national highways will go out to tender this year and all maintenance and repair work will be put out to tender next year.

The directorate currently oversees and maintains 119 roads having a total length of 19,100 kilometers, with around 12,500 kilometers needing to be repaired. Besides, there are 400 weak bridges and nearly 3,000 kilometers of national highway that is in bad condition.

According to statistics of Vietnam Register, the amount of road maintenance fees collected from vehicles nationwide was estimated at some VND5.4 trillion last year, exceeding the target by VND1.4 trillion.

Roughly one-third of the amount collected will be allocated to localities to maintain provincial roads while the rest will be used for national highway maintenance
